This is the sixth year that the parish participates in the nationwide program, Souper Bowl of Caring, that coincides with the Super Bowl festivities nationwide.
TAMARAC – While Miami hosted the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 7, a group of volunteers at St. Malachy Parish in Tamarac hosted their sixth annual Souper Bowl of Caring to raise money for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Thirty-three students from the parish’s confirmation class collected money inside soup bowls after the 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Masses and two students made announcements at each Mass explaining the program.
“We’re teaching the confirmation students about how they can help others,” said Sylvia Carrizales, event organizer and member of the Columbiettes, the women’s auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus who sponsor the yearly event. “Because of the economy, it could be their own families that need assistance, it could be their neighbor or someone they know.”
Carrizales estimated that about $900 was raised this year for the St. Vincent de Paul Society; previous years garnered about $1,000 each.
“A lot of people were out celebrating the Super Bowl on Sunday but not everyone can do this at this time. This event raises money and helps the young people become aware of this,” Carrizales said.
