Archdiocese of Miami Haiti Relief Efforts

Monday, January 25, 2010
Florida Catholic staff - Florida Catholic

Miami… Catholic Charities is prepared to assist in-country Haitian organizations and families by providing temporary shelter in the Archdiocese of Miami for Haitian children who have been identified as at-risk.

The Archdiocese of Miami is not advocating for a mass exodus of at-risk Haitian children or placement of these children in foster care or adoptive homes, but rather, an orderly temporary humanitarian parole process which will protect the most vulnerable victims of this tragedy.

Catholic Charities is currently cataloging all offers of homes for fostering/adoption of Haitian children. Please email (info@ccadm.org) the following information if you would like to join the registry:

Name, mailing address, home phone, cell phone, email address Languages spoken in the home Interested in fostering/adopting/either (indicate one choice) Parish (if applicable) # children currently in the home # children you would like to foster/adopt Age of children you prefer to foster/adopt Able to support children on your own/would need assistance to cover costs?

Financial donations continue to be accepted via mail or internet donation:

Catholic Charities
Attn: Earthquake Victims
1505 N.E. 26th St.
Wilton Manors, Fl 33305

Please make checks payable to: Catholic Charities/Earthquake Victims.

One hundred percent (100 %) of the money being donated through church collections, online and check donations for the earthquake victims will go directly towards Haitian relief efforts.

Items being collected: Medical supplies, water bottles, cooking oil, dry beans and rice (20-, 50- or 100-pound bags), canned foods, new clothes and hygiene items.

How can we get in touch with you?
TAMI CHRISTIAN - 1/28/2010 5:43 PM
Good afternoon -Please consider us; we are a very active and loving family. We are an English speaking family of 3. I have 2 daughter's ages 12 and 10 and we would very much enjoy opening our home to a child or siblings. We are christians and are very active in our church, Kensington Community Church. We are active with local outreach programs. Both my daughters attend Marist Academy Notre Dame Prep. and I can get letters of recommendation from the administration there, if necessary.

We would be interested in one child, age 3-8, preferably a girl. However, we would consider siblings if a home was needed. I am employed full time and would not have any problem supporting an additional child or two.

DAN AND LANA ROBILLARD - 1/26/2010 2:23 PM
Me and My wife are interested in the adoption of 1 possibly 2 orphaned siblings from the Haiti disaster. We have contacted our Representative and Senators and have currently heard nothing. We have a loving and caring home in Michigan that could support these children. May god bless your organization for supporting these children in need.

Hello from Tampa, Florida. My husband and I have been married for Thirteen years, we feel joy about the opportunity to introduce ourselves and share with you our heartfelt desire to open our home and become parents to a child from Haiti, if the LORD would permit even adopt.

God Bless.
SUSAN LILAVOIS - 1/26/2010 6:45 AM
Her is a copy of a letter that I wrote to the White House:

Dear First Lady Obama,

I am writing to you as a mother to plead for your help for the children of Haiti. They can’t wait a month, a year, a lifetime for someone to do something. They need help now. They can’t wait for all of the red tape and bureaucracy. They need help now.

Even before this crisis, there were thousands of orphans in Haiti. Now there are many more that have lost their parents or even extended family and have no one to care for them or love them. I have thought for many years that I would like to adopt a child from Haiti one day. This is, after all, the poorest country in the hemisphere with very little social services provided for those most in need. I thought I would never be able to realize that dream.

Unfortunately, my husband was diagnosed with leukemia a few years ago. After a successful transplant, he has been in remission now for almost 2 years. In addition, I have a 5 year old daughter who is smart, funny, and visually impaired. She is the light of my life and amazes me every day. With all of this going on, I thought who in their right mind would let us adopt a child? I don’t know what the future holds for my family. What I do know is that right now I can provided a loving home, either temporary or permanent, to a child in desperate need. The most important thing we can give a child is simply love and that we have an abundance of. The reality is that it will be generations before Haiti will be able to recover from this disaster and the children can’t wait that long.

There are thousands of families here in the United States who are willing to either foster a child until their families can be located or adopt them and give them a safe and loving home. So why isn’t anything being done?

My husband is first generation American. His father was born in Haiti and his mother was born in Italy as a Jewish refugee from Yugoslavia. This country can provide an opportunity to a new generation of children in need. I implore you to help cut through the red tape. Talk to the Haitian authorities. Talk to the State Department. It breaks my heart every time I see the faces of children suffering on the TV when I know we can help them. We need to do what is best for these children. Airlift them out NOW and bring them to safety.

Sincerely,
Susan Lilavois

Please continue to advocate for this program to get started----surely there are MANY IDENTIFIABLE orphans already. ~With God, ALL things are possible!

A classmate of my 10 yr old son lost family members in the earthquake. I would love to open my home to a child who needs it.
MARY ANNE CHERAZ - 1/23/2010 10:10 AM
My husband and I would love to help by adopting one or two children in need of a loving family. We have two adopted children already and feel that we have more love to give. Please let us know what we can do...
MARY MARTORANA - 1/22/2010 10:21 PM
I am growing more and more frustrated listening and reading the opinions of the anti-adoption advocates. Isn't it true that we can bring the Haitian orphans here temporarily and provide them with foster care while UNICEF and other agencies search for their parents? What about the 380,000 kids whom were given up by there parents? I hear more reports of parents wanting to give up their kids for a better chance in life than I do parents frantically looking for their children.
What I understand from the explanations of World Vision, UNICEF, SOS (the hottest defendants of keeping the orphans in Haiti) the most vulnerable place for these orphans is in Haiti. Bring them to the United States and other countries that are willing and let the well meaning citizens take care of them, protect them, and feed them.
COUNT ME IN as one who will take as many of the beautiful Haitian children as I am able. I am hoping and praying with all my heart the Archdiocese of Miami can bring to fruition the Pierre Pan plan or a variation of it. I refuse to accept that it is better for the children to live outside being vulnerable to the elements and disease, lacking food and water, literally starving to death waiting for reunification, when they can wait here, in a foster care system, safe, happy, protected and loved.

ROBERT PAGAN - 1/22/2010 9:10 PM
After talking with my family weve decided that these children have had in there short lives too much tragedy though my family does not have much money we have big hearts and are ready to not only share with a child what we have, which not only includes love, but also brothers, aunt's, uncles, and many cousins.
MONICA - 1/22/2010 8:43 PM
I am very interested in adopting or fostering a Haitian orphan. I understand that adoptions are on hold pending the location of other family members in Haiti but I would appreciate receiving updates as the situation evolves.
LINDA GAGE-LEFLORE - 1/22/2010 11:24 AM
In the wake of Haiti's Earthquake there are many Haitian Families that are feeling very hopeless and unfortunate right now. My family has seeked God (Matthew 6:33) concerning "How can we help." First, God reminded me how bless my family is, and yes I couldn't agree more with HIM. My family is very blessed. We are Blessed in the City and Blessed in the Field. And secondly, God then mandated that my family help the children. Therefore, with that being said, my family is willing to open our home and share God's blessings with the children of Haiti. Please keep the public well informed concerning the arrival of these children. And, please provide the process on how to receive these children in our homes. May God continue to bless and cover the people of Haiti and may God continue to bless the Archdiocese of Miami for their faithful committment to the Haitian Nation.
HEATHER COSTA - 1/22/2010 10:50 AM

My husband and I would like to assist in taking care of two or three children from Haiti. We've been researching Russian adoption, but with what has happened in Haiti, we know we should direct our love to those children. We have one son who is 4 1/2 and we've tried, without success, to provide him with a sibling or two! We are parishoners at St. Columban here in Cincinnati and are available at any time to discuss how we can help.

Hi,
I was wondering who I contact regarding adopting a child from Haiti. I am a mother of 4 ages 8 - 19. I was adopted myself when I was young and would love to be able to give back by helping an orphaned child from Haiti, especially in this time of great suffering and need.

Please let me know who to contact or how to proceed.
BRIDGETTE CRIGLER - 1/20/2010 1:58 PM
Like thousands of others in the US and the world, my husband and I are very concerned about the children of Haiti. We understand that there is a process that must be followed to provide homes for the children and that every effort must be made to find missing relatives, etc. In the meantime, these children must be cared for – we would be very willing to foster a child/ren until permanent arrangements can be made. Please add us to a list (if one exists) of people willing to open their homes to a child in need. You can reach me at this email address or by phone. We have three grown children, own our home and live in Radford, VA. Thank you and God Bless.

Our family desires to help, our hearts are open and our home is ready to serve God's people. We are a Catholic family that is very loving, we have four children three girls and a son. There ages are 10,9,7, and 4. We would be blessed to help with any child, of course my son would love a brother. We have never attempted adoption before and have no idea what process to take, please help us. We live in the mountains of Maryland where I homeschool and my husband runs his own electrical business. We are offering this up to the Lord and know that if it is His will then we will be contacted. Praise the Lord for all the help people are offering and for the ability for the world to unite for a greater good for Life. I pray you ministry will save thousands of lives and unite children in loving homes.
LETY CARLUCCI - 1/19/2010 10:06 PM
My husband and I want to adopt a child from Haiti. We have been inmensively blessed with 5 beautiful lovely ladies ages; 29, 27, 24, 14, 13 and God has continued to bless our lives by sending two lovely grand-daughters and a handsome, wonderful grandson. Our heart have enough room to extent our love and care to a lovely child. I continue to listen to the news and cry at scenes of seeing the faces of the most vulnerable ones; "the kids". If someone could please call me and guide me as to where we should direct ourselves to start the process of adopting a little boy or girl, and if they are siblings, well than both. I know God is looking over our brothers and sisters in Haiti. God Bless them !!!

A Prayer To Our Eternal and Gracious God

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that tore through Haiti causing a hospital and several other buildings to collapse, we ask that your healing hand of restoration would
be upon this country. We also pray and lift up the surrounding areas affected by the trauma.

Bless and cover them with your love and peace as many await to hear from loved ones. We pray for communication channels to be opened so as to expedite the speed of services
to those affected. As aid is identified and needed, we pray that an abundant supply will be at their disposal.

Knowing and believing that you are willing and able to supply all that is needed, we ask in Jesus Name.

Amen
